Rory McIlroy is reflecting on his 2024 season, still feeling the sting of his loss to Bryson DeChambeau at the U.S. Open in June. As he prepares to conclude his campaign in the Middle East this week, McIlroy is close to securing a sixth Race to Dubai title at the DP World Tour Championship. He leads Thriston Lawrence by 1,785 points and needs a top-11 finish on Sunday to clinch the season-long crown for the third consecutive year.
Despite not achieving all his goals this year, McIlroy remains proud of his consistent performance. "Incredibly consistent again. I've been really proud of that over the past few years," he stated during a pre-tournament press conference in Dubai. He acknowledges missing out on a fifth major title but focuses on future opportunities and positive achievements, including three wins this year with a chance for a fourth.

Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy admits that losing the U.S. Open due to late bogeys left lasting scars. "I should be sitting up here with a fifth major title and I'm not, so that stings," he said. However, he remains optimistic about future chances and considers this season successful despite not meeting every goal.
A victory would mark McIlroy's sixth Race to Dubai title, equalling Seve Ballesteros' total and moving him closer to Colin Montgomerie's record of eight titles. Winning another Harry Vardon Trophy holds significant meaning for him as it aligns with his father's admiration for Ballesteros. "Seve is almost like, not a mythical character to me... But he was my dad's favourite player," McIlroy shared.
This year, McIlroy secured one win on the DP World Tour by claiming the Dubai Desert Classic in January. He also finished second four times, including at the US Open and BMW PGA Championship. Matching Ballesteros' achievements is particularly meaningful given Ballesteros' impact on European golf and its tours.
McIlroy acknowledges that while he may not remember much of Ballesteros' career firsthand due to age differences, he appreciates Ballesteros' contributions to golf in Europe and beyond. Drawing level with such an influential figure is something McIlroy finds very rewarding as he continues striving for excellence in his career.
As McIlroy wraps up another competitive season, he remains focused on maintaining high-level performances while cherishing opportunities ahead. His journey reflects resilience amid challenges while aiming for historic milestones within professional golf circles worldwide.
