Rory McIlroy Reflects On The Toughest Ryder Cup Week Of His Career

Rory McIlroy describes the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage as the toughest mentally he has faced, amid hostile crowds. He credits strong partnerships, especially with Shane Lowry, for Europe’s away victory, and reflects on overcoming pressure to secure his sixth Ryder Cup victory while pursuing more major success.

Rory McIlroy says the Ryder Cup victory at Bethpage Black in 2025 tested mental strength more than any event in a year that already included the Career Grand Slam. McIlroy described the away win over the United States as his hardest Ryder Cup experience, despite also celebrating a breakthrough Masters triumph earlier in the season.

The Northern Irish star arrived at Bethpage as the first European to capture all four majors, following a play-off success over Justin Rose at the Masters in April. McIlroy then added to that high by delivering 3.5 points in New York, driving Europe towards a rare away win against the United States.

Rory McIlroy: Tough Ryder Cup Week

The atmosphere at Bethpage Black was hostile throughout, with several European players clashing with sections of the gallery. McIlroy found that environment especially intense, yet also saw it as a sign of respect from home fans who viewed McIlroy as a main danger to the United States and focused much of their attention on the four-time major winner.

The Ryder Cup at Bethpage was probably the toughest, mentally, that I've ever had to be, McIlroy told Sky Sports. As much as you want to go through those few days and not let it get to you, I think you're only human if at some point something gets through and you react. I reacted a couple of times that week, but every time I did react, I felt like I responded wellwhether that was hitting a good shot or holing a putt or whatever it was. Reflecting on all this, you want to try to take it as a compliment that they targeted me more so than anyone else, because it means that they saw me as a threat, which is ultimately a good thing.

McIlroy’s 3.5-point haul placed McIlroy behind only Tommy Fleetwood, who contributed four points for Europe. That output helped Europe become the first side since 2012 to claim the Ryder Cup away from home, matching the success at Medinah and underlining the scale of the challenge the European team faced at Bethpage.

By the final day’s singles in New York, Europe held the biggest lead seen at any Ryder Cup since 1979. That advantage owed plenty to McIlroy’s partnership with Shane Lowry during the four-balls, where the pair combined for a win and a draw. Their performances built crucial early momentum against a strong United States line-up.

Ryder Cup partnership of Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry

Lowry holed the putt that confirmed Europe would at least retain the trophy after a strong United States comeback in the Sunday singles. McIlroy believes Lowry’s overall golf across the four-balls deserves greater recognition, beyond the attention placed on the emotional scenes and personality clashes that marked the week.

People talk about Shane and how he was Rory's bodyguard, but that dismisses the golf that Shane played for those two days, McIlroy said. He played amazingly on Friday and basically won us the match on Saturday afternoon. He lives for the Ryder Cup. Shane and I, on paper, in the fourballs, were probably not the best matchup or the best pairing stats-wise, but stats don't talk about what it's like to be out there with someone that you have full trust in, who is going to protect you. I'm just so glad Friday and Saturday afternoon I was out there with Shane and no-one else, because I definitely felt like he provided a buffer for me that I needed, especially those two matches.

Across a season highlighted by personal history at Augusta National and collective success at Bethpage Black, McIlroy viewed the away Ryder Cup win as a defining mental achievement. The mix of crowd hostility, high expectations and tight matches left McIlroy with a lasting memory that stood alongside the Career Grand Slam as a key marker of 2025.
