Rumesh Pathirage Joins Elite 92m Club, Becomes Only Fourth Javelin Thrower To Cross Mark Twice

Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage continued his remarkable 2026 campaign by producing another giant throw in Zurich, becoming only the fourth javelin thrower in history to breach the 92-metre mark twice.

The 23-year-old saved his best effort for the final round of the Zurich Diamond League, launching the spear 92.07 metres to secure victory. Pathirage had already established a commanding lead with an 89.90m effort before delivering his spectacular sixth-round throw.

The performance came just weeks after he set the Sri Lankan national record of 92.62m at the Rome Diamond League in June. That throw remains his personal best and the world's leading mark in 2026.

Rumesh Pathirage joins Elite List

Pathirage's latest achievement puts him in an extraordinarily exclusive group. Only three athletes had previously thrown beyond 92 metres on at least two occasions: Jan Železný, Johannes Vetter and Aki Parviainen. Železný has crossed the barrier 10 times, while Vetter has done so nine times.

The Zurich victory was also Pathirage's fourth Diamond League win of the season, following triumphs in Rome, Doha and Lausanne. He finished second in Rabat.

His dominance has transformed the javelin landscape in 2026. Pathirage has repeatedly traded blows with India's Neeraj Chopra, edging him by just nine centimetres in Lausanne last week with an 88.14m effort. Chopra did not compete in Zurich.

Pathirage now heads towards the Diamond League Final in Brussels on September 4-5, where another meeting with the world's leading throwers awaits. His extraordinary consistency has firmly established him among the sport's elite.
