Rushmi struggles in opening match

Kochi, Apr 28 (UNI) Top seed Rushmi Chakravarthi had to sweat it out to overcome a stiff challenge from Vloha Kalozitza of Belarus 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the opening match of the Federal Bank Women's International Tennis tournament at Angamaly near here today.

In the three-set match, which lasted close to two hours, though Rushmi got the upperhand in the first set, Vloha came back strongly with some commanding ground shots to take the second set.

Riding on her experience, Rushmi took the third set.

In the second match, India's Treta Bhattacharya prevailed over Indian-American Subhi Sudaram in a one-sided match 6-2, 6-1.

Earlier, Kerala Sports Council President T P Dasan inaugurated the six-day US dollar 10,000 ITF tournament.
