George Russell is confident that his performance this season secures his position at Mercedes, despite rumours of Max Verstappen potentially joining the team. Russell's comments last month about contract delays due to Mercedes' interest in Verstappen reignited speculation. Team boss Toto Wolff confirmed discussions with Verstappen but downplayed the likelihood of him joining for the 2026 season.
Verstappen, a four-time world champion with Red Bull, has an impressive record, including 19 wins in 2023 and 10 consecutive victories. However, his future became uncertain after Red Bull's principal Christian Horner was dismissed. Despite this, Verstappen stated that Horner's departure wouldn't impact his commitment to Red Bull.

When asked about Mercedes' discussions with Verstappen, Russell acknowledged ongoing talks but remained unfazed. He said, "They were and they are. That's fine. Everybody talks." He emphasised the importance of long-term planning in Formula 1 and expressed confidence in his performance securing his future.
Russell has had a strong season, currently fourth in the drivers' championship standings. He is one of only two drivers outside McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris to win a race this year. Following Lewis Hamilton's exit from Mercedes, Russell has become the senior driver, significantly outscoring rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli by 84 points.
Reflecting on the speculation surrounding his future, Russell stated it doesn't affect him. "I don't lose any sleep over it," he said. His focus remains on driving fast on track, which he believes is crucial for securing his position. He added that there are ongoing discussions but nothing to announce yet.
Russell recently secured his fourth career win at the Canadian Grand Prix and believes his performances speak volumes about his capabilities. He remarked that as long as he continues performing well, there's no reason for concern regarding his future at Mercedes.
This weekend marks Russell's return to Spa, where he previously won but lost the victory due to weight issues with his car. Reflecting on past experiences and focusing on current performance remain key for Russell as he navigates the ongoing speculation about team dynamics and potential changes.
