George Russell will lead the grid at the Qatar Grand Prix after Max Verstappen incurred a one-place grid penalty. Verstappen initially secured pole position, narrowly beating Russell in qualifying. However, he was penalised for impeding Russell during the final stages. This decision came after Verstappen's recent fourth consecutive world championship win.
The Dutch driver topped the second round of qualifying, finishing 0.055 seconds ahead of Mercedes' Russell. Yet, stewards summoned Verstappen post-session for allegedly driving too slowly on a warm-up lap. This forced Russell to take evasive action over the kerb to avoid a collision with the Red Bull car.

As neither driver was on a flying lap during this incident, Verstappen received only a one-place penalty instead of the usual three. Before the ruling, Russell expressed frustration over Verstappen's actions, stating it disrupted his final lap preparation.
The ruling altered the front row but left McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in third and fourth positions unchanged. Ferrari faced challenges with Charles Leclerc finishing fifth and Carlos Sainz behind Lewis Hamilton in seventh place.
Norris commented on the close competition throughout qualifying, noting that it gives hope for advancing in the constructors' championship despite fast cars trailing them. "We showed a good race today," he said, acknowledging his advantage of clean air at the front but anticipating a tougher race ahead.
Russell highlighted that drivers must adhere to a delta on their steering wheels to prevent slow speeds on out-laps and avoid incidents. He criticised Verstappen for not following these rules, which nearly led to an accident.
"To be honest," Russell remarked about potential penalties for Verstappen's actions, "I'll be surprised if anything happens." He expressed disappointment at how his session ended because he felt he was performing well before being impeded.
