Sagar's Sivanandan wins FIDE Chess championship

By Staff
Bangalore, May 20: B.S.Sivanandan of Sagar won the 2ndMalleswaram Association Karnataka State FIDE Rated Chess Championship scoring 9 points out of a possible 11.

M.S.Thej Kumar of Mysore also tallied 9 points. However, he paid the price for his early draw in the third round against Sushrutha Reddy as the result left him in an inferior tie break score when compared to that ofB.S.Sivanandan. The last round of the championship produced a number of scintillating encounters. The battle between the former champions Arvind Shastry and Thej Kumar was by far the most exciting encounter.

Thej Kumar erred in the end game after being a pawn up and had to be content with a draw. This immediately resulted in B.S.Sivanandan offering a draw to his opponent Y.G.Vijeyendra who gladly accepted the offer. State Women's Chess Champion Shruthi K put up a valiant fight against Sriram Sarja. However, Sriram Sarja proved too hot to handle as Shruthi went down in a long drawn battle of 65 moves.

Defending champion N.Sanjay disappointingly fmished 5thafter defeating Girish Kaushik. Sanjay is barely qualifying only because M.S.Thej Kumar is directly seeded to the National 'B'. B.S.Sivanandan, Arvind Shastry and Sriram Sarja are the others who will be representing Karnataka in the 45th National 'B' Chess Championship to be held at Dindigul from June 10thto 20th2007.

B.S.Sivanandan was by far the deserving winner of the tournament as he went from strength to strength with each passing round.
