Singapore, February 16: "Super" Sage Northcutt, who last competed in mixed martial arts four years ago, is excited to return to action when ONE Championship makes US debut later this year.
Following multiple injuries and numerous surgeries, as well as a worldwide pandemic, the American star will return to the Circle when ONE Championship ventures stateside for the very first time.
In ONE Fight Night 10: Johnson vs. Moraes III on Saturday, May 6 at the 1st Bank Center in Bloomfield, Colorado, the returning Northcutt meets Ahmed Mujtaba in a lightweight MMA clash.
As an active competitor for so much of his life, Northcutt's absence has been a test of his mettle. There has been a plethora of obstacles in his way outside of recovering from injuries, but with a date set and light seemingly at the end of the tunnel, the California kid is counting down the days until his return.
"Oh man, I'll tell you what, it feels so good to be back," Northcutt said. "It's been a while. I've been itching to get back. Not only that, getting the fight in the United States, the first US card for ONE Championship, I couldn't be more excited for that.
"You have an incredible fighter, Demetrious Johnson, headlining the card, so the card's gonna be super exciting, especially for the first card in the U.S. I'm so excited."
Northcutt's last outing came at his promotional debut in May 2019 at ONE: ENTER THE DRAGON, when the Karate World Champion locked horns with Brazilian striker Cosmo Alexandre.
The American fell short in the first frame that night, much to his dismay. The loss was the first of many obstacles standing in his way in order to return to competition.
Life became an uphill battle for Northcutt. Never one to shy away from adversity, "Super" vowed to learn from it in order to become a better martial artist.
"Being 26-years-old right now, I'm still extremely young, so I'm looking forward to a long and successful career. I feel like I'm just getting started, and I'm still so young that I can have a lot of fights," Northcutt said.
"A lot of people will be thinking, 'Hey, Sage might have some ring rust.' It's been three-and-a-half years. It's a little bit of time. But I've been training. I've been staying sharp.
"I feel like I've improved in a lot of different areas. I'm looking forward to showing it."
