Salgaocar shocks Viva Kerala by 1-0, avenge the defeat

Margao, Feb 9 (UNI) A second half goal by man of the match, Bivan D'Mello enabled bottom placed Salgaocar sports club to defeat Viva Kerala by 1-0 and register their first win after 16th round of the ONGC I league championship match, played here at Nehru stadium, Fatorda today.

The match winner goal, was result of a fine combine move and came in the 65th minute, when Nicolas Rodrigues passed to Rocus Lamare, who in quick succession switched over the ball to better placed Bivan, whose left footer found the net to make it 1-0. Bivan, thus made amends for his earlier lapse.

Salgaocar avenged the defeat they suffered against Kerala by 1-3 in the away match in the first leg.

With this win, Salgaocar increased their points tally to 10 from a win and seven draws from 16 outings, but have remained at the same bottom place. Viva Kerala too continues at the same place, above Salgaocar with 12 points from as many matches.

Earlier, in an evenly balanced first half, it was a tale of missed chances for both the teams.

Salgaocar came with a first good move as early as in the 12th minute when Rocus Lamare floated a pass to Fabio Posses, whose header was nicely saved by rival goalkeeper Nelson.

In the counter attack, Kerala's Widson Abbey after collecting pass from K V Lalu unleashed a rasping shot from close range which was smartly saved by Salgaocar goalkeeper Margues Basumatari.

The visitors had another chance to move ahead in the 35th minute but, Salgaocar goalkeeper brought one more fine save off a header from Khelemba Singh following a flag kick by Bimal Birwa.

Salgaocar had a golden opportunity to score in the 38th minute of the first half, when Shylo Malswama gave a well measured pass to Bivan D'Mello, whose powerpacked left footer hit the goal post and rebounded into the play and the half time score board remained blank.

Except one goal in favour of Salgaocar, which was the only good move in the second half, not much action was witnessed in the second half as the game was mostly restricted to mid field.
