Salgaoncar rallies to hold Churchill brothers 2-2

Margao, Sep 21 (UNI) Salgaoncar down by two goals, rallied splendidly to hold Durand Cup Runners up Churchill Brothers 2-2 and split points in the crucial GFA Vodafone Professional Football league match being played at Nehru stadium Fatorda, here today.

Churchill would have won outright had they utilised couple of splendid chances, that came their way especially in the second half, but luck did not smile on them.

All the goals came in the first half for Churchill through Dannis Fernandes in the 26th and 36th minute, while for Salgaoncar goals came through Jeros Oliveira in the 40th minute and Ivan d' Silva in the 42nd minute.

In an evenly balanced first half, Churchill surged ahead in the 26th minute through Dannis Fernandes who headed in following a flag kick by Gouramangi Singh. Churchill increased their lead in the 36th minute again through Dannis Fernandes.

The goal was a result of fine combine move, Jaison Vales initiated a move and pass to Thochom Novba Singh, who in quick succession switched over the ball to Dannis, whose volley found the net to make it 2-0.

Stung by an early debacle, Salgaoncar accelerated the pace of the game and reduced the margin in the five minutes before the half time, through Jeros Oliveira who headed in a freekick pass received from Bivan D Mello to make it 1-2. Salgaocar restored the parity in quick succession in the 42nd minute through Ivan d'Silva, who headed in a floated pass from the left flank by Anil Kumar to make it 2-2 at half time.

After the change over, Churchill made some desperate attempts to increase the lead and came near scoring on couple of occasions. In the 54th minute Odafe Okolie's powerpacked shot was well saved by rival goalkeeper Macklos Moraes.

In the 66th minute again Odafe's longranger shot hit the goal post and rebounded into play.

Both Churchill Brothers and Salgaocar now tied with 13 points each with four wins and draw each, but Churchill topping the table with better goal difference.

In an another match played at Tilak Ground, Vasco sports club edged out Velsao Pale by 1-0 and gained full points.

The all important goal for Vasco came in the 84th minute through Fulgacio Cardoz.
