By Subhashish Sarkar

Sarabjot Singh secured India's first medal at the ongoing International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Rifle/Pistol in Munich, clinching gold in the men's 10m Air Pistol event.

The 22-year-old Indian scored 242.7 in the eight-man final, narrowly defeating China's Bu Shuaihang by 0.2 points. Germany's Robin Walter took the bronze.

On Wednesday, Sarabjot scored an impressive 588 to qualify for the final. The line-up included notable competitors such as reigning Chinese World Champion Bowen Zhang, four-time Olympian Yusuf Dikec of Turkey, along with Bu and Robin.

Given the circumstances, Sarabjit achieved a convincing start-to-finish victory, earning his second individual ISSF World Cup medal, following his breakthrough gold in Bhopal last year.

The Ambala shooter started strong, firing three high 10s in his first five shots to take an early lead. He maintained consistent performance and held the lead until Walter caught up with him at the 14th single shot.

A clutch 10.8 for his 15th looked to have settled the final as Walter wilted with an 8.6. After Zhang bowed out in fifth, Walter upset four-time Olympian Yusuf Dikec of Turkey for bronze.

Going into the final two shots, 1.4 separated Sarabjot from Bu, who was now enjoying the chase as pressure told on Sarabjot. In the end, he did well to hold on for a confidence boosting win.

The year 2023 was brilliant for Sarbjot Singh; he won one gold (10m Air Pistol Men, team) and one silver (10m Air Pistol (mix team ) at the Asian Games, two gold medals at the ISSF World Cup, and a bronze medal at the Asian Shooting Championships.
