Almeria (Spain), Nov. 27: India's Sathiyan Gnanasekaran added another feather in his table tennis cap as he annexed the 2017 ITTF Challenge Spanish Open title here on Sunday night. The ninth seed beat eleventh seeded Kazuhiro Yoshimura of Japan 4-2 in an exhilarating final.

Earlier, the country's top pair of Manika Batra and Mouma Das came within a whisker of making it a grand two out of two in the women's doubles. They, however, slipped in the last two games of the final against Jihee Jeon and Haeun Yang of Korea to return with a silver.

Chennai's Sathiyan had to summon all his fighting instincts to get the better of an attacking Kazuhiro. They exchanged the first four games, with Sathiyan winning the first and the third 11-7, 11-6 and Kazuhiro taking the second and the fourth 11-3, 11-6.

The fifth game proved to be critical as the two players desperately tried to outwit the other. Kazuhiro eventually edged ahead 11-10, needing just one more point to snatch a one-game lead.

But the 24-year-old Sathiyan won the next three points to claim the game. He rode on that confidence to streak to a 11-7 victory to take a well-deserved gold medal.

In the semifinal, Sathiyan beat Siu Hang Lam of Hong Kong 4-1 (11-7, 11-8, 11-3, 8-11, 12-10).

The doubles pair of Manika Batra and Mouma Das put up a valiant fight against Jihee Jeon and Haeun Yang of Korea but just couldn't deliver the killer blow.

They won the first game 11-9 to raise the hopes of Indian fans in the stands. But a couple of unforced errors saw them lose the next 6-11. They steadied themselves to win the third game 11-9 to regain the lead.

But the Korean pair lifted its game and won the next two 11-9, 11-9 to clinch the gold.

Manika-Mouma also overcame Ana Garcia and Xuan Zhang of Spain in a 3-2 thriller. They won 9-11, 11-7, 11-7, 6-11, 16-14.
