Johannesburg, Sep 23: In what comes as a huge sigh of relief to the scandal-marred Delhi Games, South Africa, a sporting power, has decided to send its team to compete in the Commonwealth Games 2010.

South Africa's top sports administrator on Thursday, Sep 23 confirmed the country's participation by expressing satisfaction over the preparations for the Games.

“We are satisfied that all the areas of concerns have been addressed as for now," said Tubby Reddy, head of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee.

This, no doubt, comes as a boost to India, which has been facing flak in international
sphere over shoddy work at the Games villages and other concerns pertaining to security and health. However, South Africa has made it very clear that if health or safety of the athletes are compromised at any point of time, the team will immediately withdraw.

“Team"s safety and health are of paramount importance to us and if at any stage we feel that those are compromised in any way we will not hesitate to bring the team back home," Reddy said in a statement, which was issued after a South African safety team inspected the site of the Games to investigate reports of squalid conditions and inadequate security.

Several athletes from UK, Australia and Canada recently opted out of the CWG 2010 on security and health concerns. While worries on security emerged prominently after the Sep 19 Jama Masjid firing, the dengue outbreak in the Indian national capital has been causing health concerns.
