Scheffler Backs Furyk To Excel As Ryder Cup Captain For Team USA In 2027

Scottie Scheffler has expressed strong support for Jim Furyk after Furyk is named Team USA captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor. Scheffler, the world number one, has played under Furyk before and believes that experience will help the United States challenge Europe in Ireland.

"Jim is a really good leader. He's extremely organised in the way he does things," said Scheffler. "I think with Jim, you just have so much experience across so many team events, whether it's playing or being a captain. The guy's been on those teams for what seems like forever."

Scheffler stressed Furyk's long record in team golf and leadership roles at the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup. "He had such a long career out here and was so good for a long time. He's been a captain and assistant captain on Ryder Cups as well. I think he brings a lot of knowledge and experience to the table."

Furyk's appointment for 2027 gives the 55-year-old a second spell as Ryder Cup captain, after leading the United States in 2018, when Europe won in Paris. Furyk is only the fourth United States captain since 1979 to take charge more than once, following Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Davis Love III.

Across the past three decades, Furyk has featured in every Ryder Cup either as a player or as part of the leadership group. Between 1997 and 2014, Furyk played in multiple editions and won two events as a player. More recently, Furyk also captained the United States at the 2024 Presidents Cup, where Scheffler was part of the team.

Scheffler explained that, despite being world number one, there was no consultation about the 2027 captaincy choice, with Tiger Woods having been widely linked to the job before withdrawing. "No, I have no input at all," Scheffler said. "I found out when you did. Would I like to have input? If they want me to have input, then I can have input."

Scheffler then highlighted how the Ryder Cup is controlled. "But the PGA of America runs the Ryder Cup, and it's not the PGA Tour, it's not the players, it's the PGA of America, it's not us. So if they want my opinion, they have my phone number, I'm sure. I had to fill out a bunch of forms to play in the tournament."

The announcement of Furyk as captain for the 46th Ryder Cup is also confirmed through official channels, underlining the United States plan for Adare Manor in 2027.

With Furyk confirmed and Scheffler offering public backing, the focus now turns to how Team USA will shape its plans for 2027. Furyk's extensive Ryder Cup history and Scheffler's confidence suggest a clear belief inside the camp that the leadership structure is already firmly in place.
