Scottie Scheffler anticipates a tough weekend at the Players Championship after a challenging start. The two-time defending champion and current world number one scored a two-under 70 in his second round at Ponte Vedra Beach, following a three-under on Thursday. With an overall score of five under, he trails leaders Min Woo Lee and Akshay Bhatia by six shots. Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa are also strong contenders at nine under.
Despite favourable conditions on Friday, Scheffler couldn't fully capitalise on the Florida course. He expects Saturday to be more difficult due to high winds. "It's going to be pretty challenging this weekend," Scheffler remarked after his second round. "The golf course was definitely gettable in the first two days, but I wasn't able to take advantage of it in the way that I would have hoped to."

Scheffler expressed frustration over missed opportunities, noting that many good putts narrowly missed the hole. "The amount of good putts I hit that just went right around the hole... at times last year those were the putts that would go in, and in the last few weeks it seems like they haven't been," he said.
Scheffler will benefit from an earlier tee time on Saturday as he aims to improve his performance in 2025. Reflecting on past experiences, he stated, "I don't have to play perfect golf in order to try to win tournaments, and sometimes I try to lean on that a little bit when I'm out there." He emphasised that each year is different and draws strength from previous experiences of playing well despite challenges.
Further down the leaderboard, Justin Thomas made a remarkable comeback on Friday. Initially at risk of missing the cut, Thomas delivered an impressive performance with eleven birdies and one bogey for a 10-under 62. This score marked a 16-shot improvement from his first round and tied for the lowest score ever recorded at Sawgrass.
Thomas now sits just one shot behind Scheffler for the week. Patrick Cantlay and Rickie Fowler are also tied with Scheffler at five under par. Thomas' dramatic improvement highlights his resilience and determination as he continues to compete fiercely in the tournament.
The competition remains intense as players navigate challenging conditions at Ponte Vedra Beach. With high winds expected over the weekend, golfers will need skill and strategy to succeed. As Scheffler seeks redemption and others aim for victory, fans can anticipate an exciting conclusion to this prestigious event.
