Scottie Scheffler Looks Forward To Challenge Of Maintaining Lead At PGA Championship

Scottie Scheffler, leading the PGA Championship by three shots, reflects on the significance of winning and prepares for a competitive final round.

Scottie Scheffler, the world number one, has begun to contemplate the significance of winning the PGA Championship. A remarkable third round performance has positioned him three strokes ahead at the top of the leaderboard. Initially trailing Jhonattan Vegas by three shots at the halfway point, Scheffler faced an early setback with a bogey on the first hole.

After a lengthy delay due to thunderstorms, Scheffler's game took a turn. He managed an eagle on the 14th hole and followed it up with three birdies in his final four holes, closing with a score of 65. "It [winning] would mean a lot," he expressed. "These tournaments are very important to us and you work your whole life to have a chance to win major tournaments, any tournament for that matter," he added.

Scheffler Eager for Final Round Challenge

Scheffler is aware of the challenge ahead as he prepares for the final round. "Tomorrow I have a good opportunity to go out there and try and win the golf tournament, but it's going to take another really good round," he stated. With many skilled players close behind on the leaderboard, he knows someone will likely post an impressive score.

Elsewhere at Quail Hollow, Bryan DeChambeau faced difficulties towards the end of his third round. He dropped three shots between holes 16 and 18, which affected his standing significantly. DeChambeau's troubles saw him slip to T8 and five under, level with US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley.

"I played really good, just really disappointed with the way it ended," DeChambeau remarked. He noted missed opportunities on hole 17 where he could have made a birdie instead of a double bogey due to changing winds. Despite some great up-and-downs and birdies, he felt he left several chances unutilised.

McIlroy's Hopes Dashed

Rory McIlroy's aspirations for consecutive major wins have diminished after shooting one over par in his third round. This result dropped him to T49 with an overall score of two over after three rounds. The outcome has effectively ended his chances in this tournament.

Scheffler remains focused on maintaining his lead as he looks forward to concluding the tournament successfully. "It's up to me to go out there and have another really good round and finish off the tournament," he said optimistically about facing this challenge.
