Scottie Scheffler is preparing for The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass by downplaying concerns over recent results. The world number one says personal standards differ from outside views as Scheffler targets a third Players title, which would match Jack Nicklaus and underline continued control rather than dominance of form.
Scheffler opened the 2026 PGA Tour season strongly with a four-shot victory at The American Express. Since that win, Scheffler has placed third, fourth, 12th and 24th in four starts, with the 24th coming at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, which was Scheffler's lowest PGA Tour finish in 13 months.

Reflecting on that stretch, Scheffler stressed that self-assessment remains separate from weekly narratives around The Players Championship. "I'm always my own biggest critic, said Scheffler. Your expectations of me are living week by week. My expectations of myself are almost more shot by shot." That view shapes how Scheffler approaches preparation for TPC Sawgrass.
As attention shifts towards title prospects at The Players Championship, Scheffler pointed to how stories build around results. "I think when you look at the perspective of the media, it's always trying to create a story, which can be a great thing - that's part of your job. But when it comes to my golf game, my expectations are all based around what I want. For me mentally on the golf course, it's about being committed to what I can do and controlling that aspect. So far, throughout this season, I've been really good in some spots and then some other spots I feel like I can improve in terms of my commitment to the shot. The conclusion is I'll trust my feel before anything else."
The Players Championship has already been a productive event for Scheffler, who has lifted the trophy twice in the last three years. A third win at TPC Sawgrass would place Scheffler alongside Nicklaus as the only three-time champions, reinforcing Scheffler's strong record on one of the PGA Tour's most demanding layouts.
For the opening two rounds of The Players Championship, Scheffler is grouped with Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Thomas. That pairing adds further focus to the world number one's title defence prospects at TPC Sawgrass, as Scheffler seeks improved execution while keeping trust in feel and commitment central to this latest challenge.
