Scottie Scheffler addressed concerns about his driving accuracy after the first round at The Open in Royal Portrush. Despite hitting only three fairways, he ended just one shot behind leaders Matt Fitzpatrick, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Harris English, Jacob Skov Olesen, and Haotong Li. Scheffler's skill helped him recover from difficult positions, finishing with consecutive birdies on holes 16 and 17.
Scheffler defended his performance, stating, "I actually thought I drove it pretty good. I don't know what you guys are seeing." He explained that the challenging weather made it difficult to hit fairways. His errant tee shots resulted in bogeys, but his putting kept him competitive. Reflecting on his putting struggles at the Scottish Open, Scheffler said, "Putting is one of those deals where...you can hit a lot of good putts that don't go in."

Rory McIlroy also faced challenges during his opening round but managed to stay in contention with a score of 70. Six years after his previous struggles at Royal Portrush, McIlroy avoided major setbacks despite missing the fairway on his opening shot. He limited the damage to a bogey and reached three-under by the 10th hole.
Reflecting on his experience playing an Open at home, McIlroy shared, "I didn't feel like I was walking into the unknown this time around." He noted that he had a better understanding of what to expect compared to his previous appearance at the venue. Despite challenging conditions in Northern Ireland, McIlroy managed birdies on holes 16 and 17 to finish one-under.
The changing weather added difficulty to McIlroy's round as he navigated through rough and bunkers. "It was a tough enough day," he remarked about playing under par despite these challenges. Both golfers demonstrated resilience in their rounds amidst unpredictable conditions.
Scheffler's ability to recover from wayward shots and McIlroy's steady play highlight their determination. Both players remain focused on maintaining their form as they continue competing for top positions at The Open this weekend.
