Seeded players advance in TT Championships barring few upsets

Kochi, Sep 6 (UNI) In a major upset, third seed Anirban Nandi (PSPB) was shown the doors by Shivananda Sheshadri (TN) in the first round of men's singles at the OSEL National ranking Table Tennis Championships at Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium here today.

In a hard fought match, Sheshadri defeated Nandi 11-7, 11-8, 11-7, 11-9.

In other matches, sixth seed Ranbir Das (PSPB) entered the next round by overcoming Birupaksha (WB) 13-11, 11-5, 11-9, 10-12, 4-11, 11-7. 13th seed Devesh Karia also entered the next round by defeating Chiranjeeb Chaudhary (WB) 11-8, 11-7, 11-7, 11-9.

Rajat Kamal (TN), seeded no 12 beat Francis (Bihar) 11-4, 11-5, 11-6, 11-3 to book a place in the next round.

In an another upset, tenth seed G Jitendra (AP) was outclassed by Sayan Paul Roy (RSPB) 8-11, 11-6, 11-8, 8-11, 5-11, 7-11.

National Champion Sharath Kamal (PSPB) will be playing his first round match tomorrow.

In the women's singles, top seed Paulomi Ghatak (PSPB) defeated Sapna Sharma (GUJ) 11-7, 11-5, 11-4, 11-8 to enter the second round.

In an upset, fifth seed Swarna J (TN) was ousted by Pooja Saharspuaj (MAH) 9-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-8, 11-7 11-7. Fourth seed Mouma Das (WB) advanced to the next round by defeating Shreya Ghosh (WB) 11-9, 11-5, 11-7, 14-12.

In Junior Girls singles top seed Pooja S (MAH), second seed Shreya Ghosh (WB) fourth seed Ankita Das (NB), fifth seed Shruti T (MAH), ninth seed Tulika Roy (WB), tenth seed R Madhuri (KAR) have entered the quaterfinals.

In the Sub-Junior Boys singles, top seed Avik Das (NB) had to sweat out in his second round match to overcome a stiff challenge from Subhajit Kar (WB) with the scoreline of three games to two.

In the first round the top seed defeated Naman Kumar from Bihar.

Fourth seed Arnab Adhikari (NB) defeated Sandipan Dey (PSPB) and fifth seed S Sundar (Ker) outclassed Ayan Basak (NB) in their second round matches.

The Sub-Junior Girls singles saw all top five seeds winning their first round matches emphatically.
