Seeds retain spot on day one, save one

By Staff

Kolkata, Jan 21 (UNI) All the seeds did justice to their ranks on the opening day of the ONGC ITF Junior Tennis 2008 at the DKS here today.

Top seed from India B Vikram Reddy had an easy day today against Kazakhisthan's Sergey Brotgal as he went on to win in straight sets by 6/1,6/2.

One of the best matches of the day was seen too early in this week today, when third seed Sudanwa Sitaram had a battle against Ronak Manuja.

The first two sets took almost two hours to complete with both players bagging one set each. In the final set, while Sudanwa was 4-2 up, it was a sheer bad luck for Manuja, who had an unfortunate fall and had an ankle twist had to concede the match 6/2, 6/7(3), 4/2 (conc).

Local boy and wild card Bibaswan Deb had a tough draw against Sumeet Shinde to whom he fell in straight sets 2/6,1/6. Even Amrita Mukherjee, another local champion and a wild card, had a similarly tough draw as she played against Kyra Shroff and went down 1/6,3/6 in about one hour ten minutes.

The mini upset of the day was caused by J Mohit Mayur, who trounced ninth seed Lakshit Sood in straight sets 6/3,6/0.
