Sergio Perez's Future At Red Bull: Christian Horner Discusses Driver's Upcoming Decisions Amid Exit Rumours

Christian Horner hints at Sergio Perez's uncertain future with Red Bull amid exit discussions. The driver faces pressure after a challenging season and must decide his next steps following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Christian Horner has suggested that Sergio Perez's future with Red Bull depends on the driver himself. This comes amid speculation about his potential exit after the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Perez has faced pressure throughout the season, scoring only 152 of Red Bull's 581 points and often trailing behind teammate Max Verstappen. Despite a strong start, his performance has waned.

Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson are considered top contenders to replace Perez at Red Bull in 2025. Tsunoda is set to drive the main Red Bull car for the first time during the post-season Abu Dhabi Test next Tuesday. He has outperformed Lawson in their five events as teammates at RB, following Daniel Ricciardo's departure in September.

Horner Discusses Perez's Future at Red Bull

Perez secured a two-year contract extension in June after finishing on the podium in four of the first five races. However, he struggled again in Qatar, failing to finish and officially ending Red Bull's pursuit of the constructor's title. This year, Perez has retired from four races, matching his 2014 record and only surpassed by six retirements in 2012.

Horner acknowledged Perez's contributions over recent years, stating: "Checo has been a wonderful driver for us. Certainly, in 2021, 2022, 2023, he contributed to Max's championship in 2021 and the constructors' in 2022 and 2023." Horner also praised Perez as a person but noted that he is not enjoying his current situation.

The team principal emphasised that while they will support Perez until the final race in Abu Dhabi, it is ultimately up to him to decide his future. "What he decides to do, that will be his decision at the end of the day," Horner said. "He's old enough and wise enough to come to his own conclusions."

Perez still holds a contract for the 2025 season on paper. However, Horner admitted to Sky Sports F1 that Perez’s recent lack of results has impacted the team negatively. The Mexican driver's performance this year has not met expectations despite previous successes.

The upcoming race remains crucial for both Perez and Red Bull as they look towards future decisions regarding their driver line-up. With one race left this season, all eyes are on how these developments will unfold.
