Sergio Perez is optimistic about negotiating his future with Red Bull after a challenging year. Despite signing a two-year extension in June following a strong start, he managed only 49 points in the last 18 races. In Abu Dhabi's final Grand Prix, Perez retired early due to a collision with Valtteri Bottas, finishing 285 points behind Max Verstappen, who secured his fourth consecutive world championship.
Red Bull's failure to retain the constructors' championship was partly due to Perez's performance decline. McLaren clinched their first team title since 1998. "I think we know how difficult this year has been, so I think it's just a matter of discussing what's best for everyone going forwards. We'll see what happens," Perez stated. He remains under contract for next year but hopes to reach an agreement that aligns with the team's goals.

Reports indicate that Red Bull plans to discuss Perez's future amid speculation about his role next season. Team principal Christian Horner mentioned before Sunday's race on Sky Sports F1: "We'll sit down with him and reflect on the season and, obviously, where it's gone wrong, and collectively work out what is the right, the right and the appropriate way forward."
The team acknowledges that Max Verstappen sets a high standard as a teammate. "Obviously, the benchmark is always your teammate. And the car has won nine races with Max at the wheel," Horner added. However, he noted that Verstappen is one of the toughest teammates to compete against.
Perez's dip in form contributed significantly to Red Bull not retaining their constructors' title. The Mexican driver expressed hope for discussions that will benefit both parties moving forward. As he said, "At the moment, I've got a contract to drive next year, so it will be down to reaching an agreement, hopefully."
As Red Bull evaluates its strategy for upcoming seasons, they aim to address issues from this year while considering Perez's position within the team. The focus remains on aligning team objectives and ensuring competitive performance alongside Verstappen.
