SGNP Shahabad to face Govt School, Ranchi in final

New Delhi, Oct 17 (UNI) Defending champion S G N Public School, Shahabad (Haryana) and Govt School Bariatu (Ranchi) had to wage grim battles to overcome their spirited rivals to set up a title clash in the 14th Nehru Junior giorls Hockey tournament here today.

In the first semi-final of the day, SGNP School piped Padma Raje School, Gwalior 1-0 and then Ranchi team put it across Govt School, Kairon (Amritsar) 4-3.

SGNP school were given run for their money by determined Gwalior girls, who also muffed some good chances to score.

After a goalless first half, Shahabad side took the lead in the fifth-minute of the second session through Ritu Rani who scored off a penalty corner (1-0).

Gwalior girls made several counter moves, but an equaliser eluded them as Shahabad girls crowded their defence and held on to the solitry goal lead till the end.

The second match was more entertaining as both the teams played a fast game. The second half was more exciting with six goals coming in space of 17 minutes in this sesion.

Shabnam Lakra put Ranchi team ahead in the 16th minute and the winners led 1-0 at lemon break.

Eight minutes into the second half, Shilwanti Minjur made it 2-0 for her side and a minute later it was 3-0 for Ranchi as Shabnam scored her second and team's third goal.

Sandeep Kaur reduced the margin for Kairon side when she converted a penalty corner in the 45th minute (1-3).

However Shilwanti Minjur again increased the tally when she scored her second and team's fourth goal (4-1) in the 52nd minute.

Kairon school did not give up and fought back bravely scoring two goals in a space of two minutes. Ramandeep Kaur made it 2-4 in the 55th minute and Harwinder Kaur further reduced the gap scoring in the 57th minute (3-4).

However in the remaining three minutes Ranchi girls managed to hold on to their slender lead to make it to the final, which is slated for tomorrow.
