Sharath enters pre-quarters at Chile Open, rest disappoint
Santiago, Apr 21 (UNI) Achanta Sharath Kamal rallied from behind to beat Dany Lo of France 8-11, 11-7, 8-11, 12-10, 11-6, 13-11 and sail into the prequarter-finals on a disappointing day for Indians at Liebherr Chile Open ITTF Pro Tour event here.
World number 92, Sharath will now have a tough match against fourth seed Lai Chak Ko of Hong Kong for a place in last eight.
Sharath had earlier beaten Manoel Bissaco of Brazil 11-4, 11-3, 11-8, 12-10 in the first round.
The rest of the Indians crashed out of the tournament.
Soumyadeep Roy defeated Argentine qualifier Pablo Tabachnik 11-4, 11-6, 11-9 12-10 before going down to 14th seed Croat Tosic Roko 8-11, 4-11, 2-11, 6-11 in the second round.
Subhajit Saha did not survive the first round, losing to Brazillian Gustavo Tsuboi 11-7, 8-11, 4-11, 11-6, 6-11, 7-11.
Young Anirban Nandi could not sustain his fine form of the qualifying round and lost to Canadian Peng Zhang 11-13, 3-11, 5-11, 9-11.
Pathik Mehta, Jubin Kumar and Anthony Amalraj also failed to impress and crashed out after first round losses.
In the women's section, seasoned campaigner Poloumi Ghatak exited the tournament after losing to top seed Tie Yana of Hong Kong 1-11, 7-11, 11-8, 5-11, 5-11 in the second round. She had earlier beaten Cho Rong An of Korea 11-7, 9-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-9, 5-11, 12-10 in the first round.
Mouma Das beat Karin Sako of Brazil 11-9, 11-6, 10-12, 7-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-5 in the opening round before tamely surrendering to Hiroko Fujii of Japan 4-11, 7-11, 4-11, 5-11 in the second round.
All other Indian women lost in the opening rounds. Kasturi Chakraborty was thrashed by Korean Se Rom Shim 5-11, 6-11, 5-11, 6-11, while Madhurika Patkar was outclassed by Ayumi Etsusaki of Japan 4-11, 4-11, 6-11, 11-9, 5-11.
Mousumi Paul went down fighting to Midori Ito of Japan 6-11, 7-11, 11-8, 13-11, 9-11, 6-11 while Shamini Kumaresan was no match to Vega Maria Paulina of Chile 5-11, 4-11, 8-11, 11-5, 9-11.
