Shijit's century puts TN on top, Kerala slump

By Staff

Chennai, Oct 9 (UNI) A fine century by P Shijit Chandran (102) and a sedate half century by Maruthi Raghav (59) put Tamil Nadu on the threshold of an outright win against Kerala on the third day of the four-day South Zone Under-22 cricket match for the P Ramachandra Rao trophy today.

Chasing an stiff target of 359 for win, Kerala were reeling at 106 for four in 40 overs. They still require another 253 runs on the final day tomorrow.

With the cushion of 42 run first innings lead, Tamil Nadu, resuming at 118 for four, declared their second innings closed at 316 for nine in 88 overs. Shijit Chandran hit 13 fours in his 182-ball knock and added 118 for the fifth wicket in 30.3 overs with Maruthi Raghav (93 balls, 9x4) to put the innings on firm footing.

K H Gopinath consolidated it with a fine 39 before the declaration came.

Kerala began their second innings badly losing early wickets, before Rajilal (41, 81 balls, 2x4, 1x6) and Praveen Achuthan (28 batting) came together to restore some respectability.

However, off spinner M Prabhu got rid of Rajilal towards the close to claim three wickets.

Brief Scores: Tamil Nadu 206 and 316 for nine declared in 88 overs (Shijit Chandran 102, Maruthi Raghav 59, Gopinath 39, M E Sanuth 3 for 105, Srijith 3 for 110) vs Kerala 164 and 106 for four in 40 overs (Rajilal 41, Praeen Achuthan 28 batting, Prabhu 3 for 39).
