Shimon Sharif to try hands in running target shooting

New Delhi, Sept 12 (UNI) Aimed at becoming the first Indian to make international grade in 10m running target shooting, rifle shooter Shimon Sharif has decided to undergo a ten-day training stint in Hungary under former world and European running target champion Zoltan Keczeli.

One of the most challenging events in the ISSF programme, 10m running target event has never been played in India nor the country has produce international shooters in this event though it has been part of the Asian Games, World Championships and other international competitions.

Sharif will train at the Keszthely Forester Shooting Club from September 13-24.

Shot with air rifles, this sport demands shooting a 0.2-inch diameter bull's eye that is moving across a 6-1/2 foot opening in only 2.5 seconds.

All shooting is done from the off hand position and the rifle must remain off the shoulder until one see's the target.

As the target keeps moving it is more challenging and spectator friendly than the other rifle events.

''I got very fascinated by this event when I saw the shooters shooting at moving targets when I participated at the World Cup at Korea in 2003 in the air rifle event,'' said Shimon.

''I have been training in the running target event since more than a year now under the guidance of Indian team's foreign coach Laszlo Szucsak who has been instrumental in motivating me to start the running target event. He even modified my air rifle to a running target rifle and worked out a suitable training plan for me in Hungary,'' he said.

''Even though Sports Authority of India has not installed the state-of-the-art running target equipment which is lying waste at its ranges in Delhi, with Laszlo's inputs we developed a locally made similar target system which I have been using for my daily training sessions.

''I would be gaining some competition exposure and will be trying to improve upon my scores in this new event by 2010 as 10m running target is part of the 2010 Asian Games and the World Championships,'' Shimon added.
