Shiraz nets winner for Punjab Police
Chandigarh, Aug 2 (UNI) Punjab Police edged past a fighting Border Security Force (BSF), both of Jalandhar, by 2-1 in the 21st Punjab State Super Football League at the Punjab Armed Police Football Ground in Jalandhar today.
In a keenly contested affair, the teams were tied one-all till the 84th minute, when Shiraz Hassan snatched the match- winner to give Punjab Police three valuable points. The match started on a slow pace but at the closing stages, the spectators remained spell-bound. Punjab Police tasted success in the 42nd minute through Harsdeep Singh who dodged past the defenders before scoring the first goal of the match.
The teams crossed over with Punjab Police leading 1-0. BSF then went all out and their moves bore fruits in the 81st minute when Amarjit Singh restored parity. However, Punjab Police were in desperate need for victory.They launched an all-out offence and got their second goal for triumph through Shiraz Hassan in the 84th minute.
It was Punjab Police's third victory from five matches they have played so far. With three wins, one draw and one defeat, the Jalandhar cops have logged 10 points and were behind leaders Rail Coach Factory of Kapurthala who have 12 points to their credit from four wins and one draw.
BSF along with Mahilpur Football Club are facing relegation. The securitymen have suffered three defeats and played two draws for two points and were at the sixth position in the seven-team league.
Mahilpur FC have a solitary point to their credit from four defeats and one draw and were bottom-placed, while JCT Academy, Jagatjit Cotton Textile, both of Phagwara and Punjab State Electricity Board have collected seven, six and five points, respectively.
