Abhinav Bindra crashes out; Narang in final

London, Jul 30: It was heartbreak as Indian shooter Abhinav Bindra failed to qualify for the men's 10m Air Rifle at the London Olympics 2012 here on Monday. However, the other Indian in the fray, Gagan Narang made it to the finals.

Narang was in top form shooting 598 out of possible 600 and qualified in third position. Bindra fell down the order with a score of 594 with 16th slot.

The top eight qualified for the final. The final starts at 4.45 PM IST today.

Narang shot 53 inner 10s while Bindra had 45.

Italian Niccolo Campriani and Alin George Moldoveanu of Romania both shot a Olympic record score of 599 each. Campriani took top position as he shot 56 inner 10s compared to Moldoveanu's 53.

Narang had five rounds of perfect 100 and one of 98 where he dropped two points. Bindra had two 100s and scores of three 99s and one 97 (sixth and last series).

Bindra started with couple of 10s and ended series 1 with 99. He hit seven inner 10s in the first round. He had 10s in nine attempts and one nine. Total tally of 99 out of maximum 100.

Bindra again shot a 99 in second series to finish with 198. He came back strongly with a perfect 100 in the third to have a score of 298 after three rounds. The Beijing Olympics gold medallist shot another round of 100 to be 398 after series 4.

Gagan Narang had a superb start with a perfect 100 in the first series. He hit a perfect 10 by shooting all inner 10s. He continued in same fashion with another round of 100 to be 200 after series 2. Narang was in great form, shooting 10s all the way to 260 and then hit a nine for the first time in the third series.

The top eight shooters make it to the final later today. Each shooter gets 60 shots and can score a maximum of 600 points.

Previous updates

There are 54 shooters in the qualification stage which is taking place at the Royal Artillery Barracks. But seven did not start and it was a 47-man line-up.

Bindra, who won gold at Beijing Olympics 2008, will be hoping to repeat that historic feat today. The finals are also scheduled for later today.

Narang is competing in his third Games. He failed to win medals in his previous attempts in Olympics (Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008).
