Simi Mehra to lead formidable Indian challenge

By Staff

Dubai, Nov 23 (UNI) Smriti Mehra, who put Indian women's golf on the map, will spearhead the home challenge against the elite of Europe when the EMAAR-MGF Ladies Masters gets under way at Bangalore's Eagleton Resort from December 3 to 8.

Better known as Simi in the golfing circles, she is the only Indian to have featured on the demanding LPGA Tour.

Simi has the power, the swing and the mental toughness to match the might of the world's best.

Currently enjoying a rich vein of form after winning the first five legs in the run up to the Women's Indian Open 2008, Simi will join a star cast led by 2006 Ladies European Tour Order of Merit winner Laura Davies and runners-up Gwladys Nocera in the euro 200,000 event, being promoted and organised by 'golf in DUBAI.' ''I am looking forward to the challenge ahead. It will be fun to play against the best European golfers,'' said Simi, who turned professional in 1994 and qualified for the LPGA Tour two years later.

''This mega event will surely bring about a revolution in the world of ladies golf in India. A Ladies European Tour event in India is something that I never thought would happen so early,'' she added.

''Like a dream, it's just around the corner -- simply unbelievable. The EMAAR-MGF Ladies Masters is going to be a landmark event for all those who love this sport,'' said India's number one player.

''When I decided to take up golf as my career and shift to the US, everybody said that it was the wrong decision, and I would fail and come back. But I have proved everyone wrong,'' said Simi, who rates her win at the FryeClassic in Kansas and a top-five finish at the British Open as one of her best golfing moments.

Joining Simi in the first Ladies European Tour event ever to be played in India will be compatriots Shalini Malik, at the present placed second WGAI Order of Merit, Sanniya Sharma, Nitika Jadeja, veteran Nonita Lall Qureshi, Meghna Bal and Sharmila Nicollet.
