Singh, Verma to vie for title in LG Poona Amateur Golf championship

Pune, Nov 12 (UNI) Simarjeet Singh, Jasjeet Singh, Gagan Verma, Vikram Rana, Karun Vasudeva and Manav Das will vie for supremacy in the LG Poona Amateur Golf Championship 2007, to be played at the Poona Club Ltd here.

The event, managed by Tiger Sports Marketing, forms the eighth leg of the LG Indian Amateur Golf Tour. The Golf Course will commence from November 13 to 16.

The main tournament will be followed by an Am-Am on Saturday.

Leading the field will be home favourite Tarun Ghogale who finished second at the LG Samarvir Sahi Amateur in Chandigarh. Three time Sri Lankan Amateur champion and No 1 ranked amateur Simarjeet Singh will also provide stiff challenge to the young guns.

Manav Das will be one player to watch out for in the tournament.

Das won the LG Noida Open Amateur and finished second at the LG Jaypee Amateur and looks all set to add another title this season.

Pakistan Amateur champion Moin Malak will also provide serious competition.

As many as 27 players from Poona including Manish Jaitha, captain of the Poona Club will add spice to the tournament.

The LG Indian Amateur Golf Tour will see an elite band of partners. The Times of India is the associate sponsors. CNN which is the 'Official News Channel' is also the hole-in-one sponsor. The channel will give away a brand new tailor-made Golf Set to the first golfer to ace the designated par-3 hole at every event.

Ten Sports is the 'Official Sports Channel', while Gatorade is the official sports drink. International apparel company Kappa is the official styling partner.

The LG Indian Amateur Golf Tour will feature five more events during the 2007-08 season. The LG Poona Amateur Golf Championship will be followed by the LG Western India Amateur in Mumbai. The tour will then move to Kolkata for the RCGC Cup and the LG Eastern India Amateur Championship followed by the LG Yatinder Singh Memorial Golf Championship in Jaipur. The tour will culminate with the all important LG All-India Amateur Golf Championship in Chandigarh.

The par-71 Poona Club Ltd (Golf) is one of the oldest courses in the country stretching to 6,604 yards. Though only five minutes from the city, it offers a quiet round of golf amid over 30,000 trees, which, apart from scenic beauty, also pose a challenge to all competitors. The greens here are said to be among the best in the country and without an iota of doubt will have a major say in deciding the winner at the LG Poona Amateur Golf Championship.
