Kolkata, Aug 23: For the first time in Indian Table Tennis history the trend in players' inclination towards training under foreign coaches seems to be changing.
Soumyadeep Roy's outstanding stint as a coach has guided Indian paddlers bring laurels to the country and stun some of the seeded Chinese players in the recent international tournaments.
One clear example of the revolutionary change in this trend is Soumyajit Ghosh. He is presently ranked 83 in the world. He along with G Sethiyan achieved silver in the recently concluded Belgium Open table tennis championship.
Speaking to MyKhel about the success, Ghosh said, "I have been training under top foreign coaches in Germany for the last couple of years. I even thought of resuming my practice under renowned Swedish coach Peter Carlsen after the recently concluded World Championship and Belgium Open TT. But now I do not need to do that. Soumyadeep Roy has been so excellent and inspiring that I will continue with him."
The 24-year old paddler added, "His key skill in coaching is the quality of handling player according to their psychology. It is true that I have played with Soumyadeep in the national team. We had shared rooms at the hotels in the abroad as well. So he knows my psychology well. But the same situation is not with other paddlers in the senior national team. Still, they are not hesitating to appreciate his coaching style."
Roy, who has been already one of the coaches for the senior national team, had a brief stint in China recently before taking up coaching seriously.
Along with Ghosh, Roy visited China's top academies and had a wide range of discussions with Chinese academy coaches.
Ghosh explained, "After coming back from China I noticed Soumyadeep has matured a lot as a coach. He basically wants to introduce a new blend in the style of our game which consists of China and Europe. I hope he will be able to deliver it within a couple of years if he gets the opportunity."
