South Asian tournament postponed until next year

By Staff

Bangkok, Oct 10: The South Asian Football Federation Cup, contested by the national teams of the Indian subcontinent, has been postponed until next year, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said today.

The biennial tournament, due to be co-hosted by Sri Lanka and the Maldives, has been moved from its original date of December 2007 to May 2008 following a meeting of federation officials.

No reason was given for the postponement, although there were no plans to change the hosts, the AFC said.

The 14-year-old competition features Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

India are four-times champions and Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have won once each.
