Sporting defeats Dempo 1-0 in I League match

Margao, Nov 8 (UNI) A second half goal by Nigerian Junior Elijah was enough for table toppers, Sporting club de Goa, to get better of fighting defending champion Dempo Sports Club by 1-0 and earn full points in the ONGC I League match, being played here at Nehru stadium Fatorda today.

The all important goal for winners came in the 84th minute of the first half, which ultimately turned out to be the match winners.

With this win, Sporting maintained their position at the top of the table with 18 points from seven outings, with six wins and a defeat. While Dempo remained on same seven points from six outings with two wins a draw and three defeats.

Though Dempo had better share of exchanges in both the halves, their forwards were not quick in grasping the advantages before them. It was a tale of missed chances for both the teams in the first half, in which Dempo had an edge.

Dempo came with a good move as early as in the 4th minute from the start with Nicolau Borges initiated a move from the left flank and sent a fine floating pass to Mboyo Iyomi whose header crushed into the right goal post and rebounded into the play and Dempo were deprived by a deserved goal.

In the counter attack, Sporting club de Goa came near scoring in the 6th minute when Nathaniol Amos after collecting a pass from Joseph Pereira unleshed a powerpacked shot, which was smartly saved by Dempo Golakeeper Satish Kumar.

Dempo were almost in the lead in the 26th minute of the first half, when Climax Lawrence's header following the flag kick by Nicolau Borges seems to be inside the goalline was cleared by Sporting defender Philip Gomes but Refree S Suresh disallowed the goal.

After barren first half, Dempo accelerated the pace of their game and could have surged ahead in the 47th minute when Mboyo sent a good pass to Renty Martin, who missed an open chance before him.

Sporting came near scoring in the 61ist minute when Chinta Chandra Shekar intiated a move and passed to better placed Nathaniol Amos whose attempted try was missed.

Sporting shot into the lead in the 84th minute through Junior, whose perfect header found the net off a cross pass given by Harmonjoth Khabra.

Stung by a goal, Dempo made some desperate attempts for an equaliser and came with couple of splendid attacking moves. In the 85th minute, Sporting goalkeeper Felix D Souza brought off a fine save diving to his right of attempted shot by Roberto Mendes Silva off a pass from Sameer Naik. Then in the injury minute of the second half, Mboyo's poor header sailed over the bar it was a good pass from Anthony Pereira.

Sporting's Junior Elijah was later adjudged the man of the match for his fine performance.
