NBA Spurs Extend Hot Run As Heat And Celtics Win Contests

The San Antonio Spurs solidified their lead with a high-scoring win, while the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics secured decisive victories, underscoring an active night in the NBA standings. Wembanyama and teammates showcased scoring versatility as teams jostle for position in the Western and Eastern Conferences.

Three contenders strengthened their NBA credentials on 9 March, as the San Antonio Spurs crushed the Houston Rockets, the Miami Heat controlled the Detroit Pistons, and the Boston Celtics earned a road win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, with all three results affecting tight playoff races in both conferences and adding further pressure on leading seeds heading into the final stretch of the regular season.

Boston’s victory in Cleveland tightened the Eastern Conference picture, with the Celtics improving to 43-21 after a 109-98 success over the Cavaliers. Jaylen Brown came close to a triple-double, finishing with 23 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, while Jayson Tatum contributed 20 points in just 27 minutes as Boston moved within 2 games of the East-leading Detroit Pistons.

Payton Pritchard supplied 18 points and seven assists, and Baylor Scheierman added 16 points plus 10 rebounds, helping Boston win for the 14th time in 17 games and stay four games ahead of fourth-place Cleveland, now 39-25. Tatum, in a second game back from a torn right Achilles, scored 12 first-quarter points and buried a deep three-pointer with 1:59 remaining to restore a 12-point cushion.

Tatum described the outing as a step toward full rhythm. "Today felt a lot more normal, just from a preparation standpoint in this league," Tatum said. "It felt like being back in the flow again." Boston led 56-36 at half-time, but the Cavaliers trimmed the gap to single digits in the fourth quarter before the Celtics ended Cleveland’s season-high seven-game home winning streak behind 30 points from Donovan Mitchell and 24 from Evan Mobley.

In Texas, the Spurs produced the night’s highest score, overwhelming the Rockets 145-120 for a 15th win in 16 outings. San Antonio, now 47-17, remains the Southwest Division leader and moved within 2 games of the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder for the Western Conference’s best record, while stretching the gap over Houston to 7 games.

Victor Wembanyama led San Antonio with 29 points, while rookie Stephon Castle delivered 23 points. DeAaron Fox compiled 20 points and 10 assists, and reserve Keldon Johnson also scored 20. Wembanyama underlined the team’s versatility on offence, saying, "Teams have a hard time figuring us out. Everybody can hit shots from everywhere on the court, so we have answers for anybody."

Houston actually edged the opening quarter by one point, but San Antonio controlled the remaining minutes and posted the franchise’s highest regulation total since a 146-125 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on May 10, 2021. Kevin Durant and Amen Thompson each finished with 23 points for the Rockets, who slipped to 39-24 and dropped a half-game behind the Minnesota Timberwolves for third in the West.

Team Record Conference
San Antonio Spurs 47-17 West
Houston Rockets 39-24 West
Miami Heat 36-29 East
Detroit Pistons 45-18 East
Boston Celtics 43-21 East
Cleveland Cavaliers 39-25 East

NBA Eastern leaders: Heat streak continues as Pistons slide

The Heat added more pressure on Detroit at the top of the Eastern Conference by beating the Pistons 121-110. Miami, now 36-29, seized control early, pushing the advantage to 25 points in the second quarter and securing a fifth straight win, also marking an eighth victory in 10 games as the team stayed just behind the Orlando Magic in the Southeast Division standings.

Tyler Herro paced Miami with 25 points, and Bam Adebayo produced 24 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Adebayo reached 10,001 career points, joining Dwyane Wade, who scored 21,556, as the only players in Miami history to reach the 10,000-point mark. The Pistons fell to 45-18, with Cade Cunningham registering 26 points and 10 assists, and Jalen Duren adding 24 points.

Detroit’s lead in the East shrank to 2games over Boston after the defeat, prompting a measured response from coach J.B. Bickerstaff. "Its the NBA, right? And you look at the season, it's long," Detroit coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. "Everybody goes through difficult times or goes through a little bit of a rut. And we just found ours right now. And again, we've got plenty of time left to do what we got to do. Boston, obviously, is a good team. But were not concerned about Boston."

The results left the Spurs pushing the Thunder in the West, the Rockets slipping further behind in the Southwest, and the East race tightening among the Pistons, Celtics and Cavaliers. Miami’s momentum, Boston’s steady form and San Antonio’s surge all shaped a significant night for NBA standings that will influence seedings as the regular season continues.
