Wembanyama Leads Spurs In Bid To Win Everything After Game 1

Victor Wembanyama stated that the San Antonio Spurs "want to win everything" after edging the Oklahoma City Thunder 122-115 in double overtime in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals, a result that immediately lifted expectations around this series following a demanding five-period battle at PayCom Center.

The Spurs’ star led the way with 41 points, 24 rebounds, three blocks, three assists and one steal, becoming only the second player, alongside Wilt Chamberlain, to deliver at least 40 points and 20 rebounds in a Conference finals debut, and matching David Robinson as the only Spurs players with such numbers in a postseason game.

Wembanyama’s performance also placed the San Antonio Spurs forward in rare NBA company, as Wembanyama became just the second player aged 22 or younger to post at least 40 points and 20 rebounds in a play-off game, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who did so in Game 5 of the 1970 Eastern Division semifinals.

Supporting Wembanyama, Dylan Harper added 24 points, 11 rebounds, seven steals and six assists for the San Antonio Spurs, posting the highest scoring return by a rookie in a first Conference finals appearance since Andrew Toney’s 26 points in April 1981 and underlining the backcourt contribution in this opening game.

Harper’s defensive work also entered the record books, as Harper became only the third rookie since the 1973-74 campaign, when steals were first officially recorded, to register at least seven steals in a postseason fixture, and the first rookie to reach that figure in any Conference finals game.

After the San Antonio Spurs’ Western Conference finals win, Wembanyama accepted that development remains essential but underlined the team’s mentality, saying: "The message would be that we as a team are ready to go into any environment, any place against anybody," when asked what statement this comeback victory might send to the rest of the league.

Reflecting further on how the San Antonio Spurs can grow through this Western Conference finals run, Wembanyama said, "Even though we've still got a lot to learn, our effort should be above everybody else's. We were relentless. A game like this is the best way to get experience. We played five quarters. So, we're learning, and by the time we get the experience, we'll compensate with our effort. We want to win everything, and we have the chance [because we] have people above us in the organisation that know how to do that. So far, it looks like they've put the right people together to give us a chance. Right now, we've got a chance."

The combination of Wembanyama’s historic stat line, Harper’s rare rookie numbers and the San Antonio Spurs’ resilience in double overtime places early pressure on the Thunder, while also underlining that this young Spurs group already competes with confidence and sees a realistic path to challenging for the NBA title from San Antonio.
