Sri Lanka threaten bans for rebel players

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, Aug 10 (Reuters) Sri Lanka Cricket has announced that any cricketer who signs with the rebel multi-million dollar Indian Cricket League (ICL) will face bans from international and domestic cricket.

Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed their stance on the unofficial Twenty20 competition after several senior players have been approached by ICL and offered lucrative contracts to participate.

''Any player that participates in a tournament or league other than Sri Lanka Cricket approved tournaments shall not be eligible for selection to represent Sri Lanka,'' a media statement confirmed after a committee meeting.

The statement added: ''The individual concerned shall not be eligible to participate in any cricket related activities conducted under the auspices of Sri Lanka Cricket.'' Participating players will also be banned from playing domestic cricket in Sri Lanka.

Earlier in the week, former captain Marvan Atapattu, 36, was granted release from his central contract after requesting that the deal worth 100,000 dollar per annum plus tour and match fees be terminated early.

Atapattu's decision is believed to have been prompted by his desire to play in the ICL tournament scheduled for later this year.

The ICL tournament is funded by Zee Telefilms, India's largest media group, which has planned for six city-based teams compromising four international stars, two Indian stars and eight young, upcoming cricketers.

Both the Indian and Pakistan cricket boards have adopted equally tough stances to Sri Lanka.
