Star Sports channel plans comprehensive coverage of Rio Olympics

Mumbai, June 16: Australian swimming legend Ian Thorpe has been roped in as an expert commentator by Star Sports network which has planned an extensive coverage of the upcoming Rio Olympic Games for the Indian viewers.

Thorpe, winner of five gold medals in two Olympic Games and clincher of 11 outdoor world titles, will be on the panel along with India's badminton ace Prakash Padukone, former Commonwealth Games women's shooting champion Anjali Bhagwat, ex-international hockey player Viren Rasquinha and swimmer Rehan Poncha, it was announced at a media conference here today (June 16).

The channel would show the Games, to be held from from August 5-21, round the clock on eight channels and the commentary will be in English and Hindi.

"Star Sports is leaving no stone unturned to provide the most comprehensive access to Indian sports fans. We will provide unprecedented coverage by dedicating eight channels on a 24x7 basis across the entire duration of the event," said Star Sports CEO Nitin Kukreja.

Star's video streaming platform "Hotstar" would also roll out between 14 and 36 'live' feeds, "free of charge", according to its CEO Ajit Mohan.
