By Staff

Bangalore, Jun 20 (UNI) Karnataka plans to build a dedicated and world-class sports city in an area of over 600 acres near Chickballapur, Minister for youth services Gulihatti Shekhar announced today.

Speaking to newspersons here he said the proposed Sports City would have state-of-the-art facilities and was planned to create a niche in world sports for the country.

He said the sports city would have the infrastructure required for the budding and upcoming sport personalities and would be equipped to empower youngsters to emerge as medal winners at Olympics and other world sports events by 2020.

He also announced that the state government also plans to to build an International standard swimming pool within the premises of Kanteerava Stadium in the city.

Replying to questions he said a meeting of sports authorities had been convened on Monday to decide whether to postpone the inaugural National Youth Games to be held here from July 20 and take up improvements in the Kanteerava stadium.

He said over 7000 sports personnel were expected to participate in the event. However threat of heavy rains during next month was a factor that could play a spoilsport. After taking inputs from meteorological department a final decision would be made, he said.
