Stephen Jones: Cowboys Believe Trey Lance Will Leave in Free Agency, Plan to Draft Quarterback in April

By Tanisha Chhabra

Stephen Jones, the Dallas Cowboys' COO and co-owner, recently shared that the team expects quarterback Trey Lance to leave in free agency. Lance was traded to the Cowboys in 2023 from the San Francisco 49ers for a fourth-round pick.

However, his time in Dallas has not lived up to expectations. Despite being a former third-overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lance has had limited chances to prove himself with the Cowboys.

Jones explained that the Cowboys took a chance on Lance but now feel it’s time to move on. With Dak Prescott signed long-term as the starting quarterback, Lance is unlikely to stay as he will likely seek a team where he can get more playing time. Lance’s only start for the Cowboys came in Week 18 of the 2024 season, where he threw for 244 yards in a loss to the Washington Commanders. While he showed athleticism, Lance struggled with his accuracy and consistency as a passer.

Looking ahead, the Cowboys plan to focus on drafting a young quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft. Jones mentioned that the team hopes to find a quarterback to develop over the long term. Although the draft class isn’t filled with top quarterbacks, Jones believes there is value to be found outside of the first round.

Backup quarterback Cooper Rush is also set to become a free agent, and the Cowboys are unsure whether he will return. Rush has performed well in the past as Prescott's backup, but his cost could affect whether the Cowboys bring him back.

In the end, the Cowboys are ready to part ways with Lance and aim to find a new quarterback through the draft. They’re looking for a young player who can develop behind Prescott and be a reliable option for the future.
