Steve Kerr Says Coaching Roles Have Expiration Dates After Warriors Play-In Loss

Steve Kerr admitted uncertainty over continuing as Golden State Warriors coach after a 111-96 play-in loss to the Phoenix Suns ended the season and raised fresh questions about the long-term future of one of the NBA’s most successful recent partnerships.

The defeat at Footprint Center allowed Phoenix to secure the Western Conference’s number eight seed, while Golden State’s campaign closed with a 37-45 record, one of the least successful during Kerr’s 12-year spell in charge and shaped heavily by significant injuries to leading players.

Steve Kerr hints at Warriors coaching future

Jimmy Butler tore an anterior cruciate ligament in January, removing a major scoring option, while 12-time NBA All-Star Steph Curry sat out 27 straight games because of a persistent right knee problem that disrupted rhythm and continuity for the Warriors across the regular season.

Curry briefly regained top form in the first play-in clash, driving Golden State past the Los Angeles Clippers, yet that surge did not carry into the matchup with Phoenix, where the Warriors’ offence stalled and the Suns controlled key stretches on both ends of the floor.

Kerr addressed his status when asked about the future after the defeat, saying: "I don't know what's going to happen, Kerr said. I still love coaching, but I get it. These jobs all have an expiration date. There is a run that happens and when the run ends, sometimes it's time for new blood and new ideas."

Kerr signed a two-year extension in 2024 that is due to expire after this season, and there have been no fresh negotiations reported, while some United States media outlets have suggested Kerr could choose to retire rather than enter another campaign on the Golden State bench.

Under Kerr, the Warriors captured four NBA championships, starting with the 2015 title in Kerr’s first season as head coach, then adding further trophies in 2017, 2018 and 2022, with Steph Curry and Draymond Green central to a dominant run that reshaped expectations around the franchise’s competitive level.

Golden State’s honours during the Kerr era can be summarised as follows:

Late in the loss to Phoenix, viewers saw an emotional moment that some interpreted as a potential farewell scene, as Kerr removed Curry and Draymond Green during the closing seconds, then gathered both near the bench, spoke briefly and gave each a combined hug after telling them: "I don't know what's going to happen next, but I love you guys to death. Thank you."

Steve Kerr and Golden State Warriors future decisions

Kerr explained that no immediate decision will be made on the coaching role, stating that time away from the court is needed to assess the situation and consider options before meeting with Golden State management and players to review the direction of the team.

Reflecting on the possibility that this could be the end of the tenure, Kerr said: "If [my time is done], then I will be nothing but grateful for the most amazing opportunity any person could have to coach this franchise in front of our fans and to coachSteph Curry, [Draymond Green], the whole group, Kerr said. It may still go on. It may not. I don't know at this point. But we all need to step away a little bit and then reconvene."

Curry made clear that personal preference would be for continuity on the sidelines, though Curry also emphasised that Kerr’s feelings and long-term satisfaction were central, saying: "I want Coach to be happy, Curry said. I want him to be excited for the job. I want him to believe he's the right guy for the job. I want him to have an opportunity to enjoy what he does, whatever that means for him. Everybody's plan is their own. He knows how I feel about him."

Kerr underlined that the relationship with Curry will weigh heavily in any decision, explaining: "That's part of the equation, Kerr said. I don't want to walk away from Steph. I'm definitely not going and coaching somewhere else next year in the NBA. I would never walk away from Steph. But all this stuff has to be aligned and right. Those are all discussions that will be had."

For now, Golden State heads into the offseason facing major strategic questions, with Kerr, Steph Curry and Draymond Green all central to discussions over whether the current core continues together or whether organisational changes follow a 37-45 year that fell short of previous Warriors standards.
