Steve Kerr To Return As Warriors Head Coach On Two-Year Contract
Steve Kerr is staying as head coach of the Golden State Warriors after agreeing a new two-year contract, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The agreement ends recent doubts over Kerr’s future after Golden State missed the playoffs.
The new deal starts with what will be Kerr’s 13th season leading the Warriors. The contract keeps Kerr as the NBA’s highest-paid coach on an annual basis, and he is set to make $17.5 million next season under the agreement.

Kerr took charge of Golden State in 2014 and guided the team into a dominant era. Under Kerr, the Warriors collected four NBA championships and reached six NBA Finals in eight seasons. The 2015-16 squad finished 73-9, breaking the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls’ single-season wins record, a team Kerr once played for.
The contrast with the most recent campaign is clear. Golden State, hit hard by injuries, went 37-45 and ended as the 10th seed in the Western Conference. The Warriors then fell to the Phoenix Suns in the play-in bracket, which sparked discussion about whether the franchise might move on from Kerr.

Discussion over Kerr’s position grew louder after the defeat in Phoenix. Speaking that night, Kerr reflected on the nature of coaching runs and the possibility of change, while also stressing continued passion for the job and the league.
"I still love coaching, but I get it," Kerr said the night his team was eliminated in Phoenix. "These jobs all have an expiration date. There is a run that happens, and when that ends, sometimes it’s time for new blood and new ideas."
Kerr’s new agreement followed three weeks of detailed negotiations, according to Charania. In addition to four titles as a coach, Kerr owns five championships as a player with the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs, adding weight to the Warriors’ choice to extend this tenure.
The extension ensures continuity for Golden State after a difficult season and confirms Kerr’s role through at least 2027. With the coach under contract and a strong record behind Kerr, the Warriors now focus on reshaping the roster for another push.
