Stolen Olympic medals found after 24 years

Melbourne, Sep 22: The medal collection worth more than 100,000 dollars belonging to Australian Olympian John Konrads have been found after 24 years ago.

Konrads' one gold and two bronze medals were stolen from his Brighton home in 1985. Dectectives found the medals that were stolen after they were listed for sale on eBay in a shoe box.

Along with the three medals that Konrads won in 1960 Rome Olympics, the detectives found three gold medals the swimming legend had won at the 1958 Cardiff Empire Games, said Detective Senior Constable Nick Uebergang.

Uebergang.also said that the medals were traced to a Corio woman who had purchased the medals at a garage sale in Queensland 10 years ago. The woman claimed she paid 200 dollars for a shoebox which contained 16 sporting medals belonging to Konrads, a stolen World War II medal and some less valuable coins.

She told the police that she thought the medals were fake.

Konrads who had lost all hopes of finding his medals was reunited with his tokens of achievement a week ago.

"He had given up all hope of ever getting them back, thinking they'd probably either been melted down or were with a collector and (that he) wasn't likely to see them again in his lifetime," said Uebergang.
