Sydney teen leads Oz eves to win over Kiwis in World Twenty20 final

Barbados, May 17 (ANI): Sydney teenager Ellyse Perry starred with the ball as the Australia's women's cricket team won the World Twenty20 championship with a hard-fought three-run victory over New Zealand in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Down 2-14 in the third over after captain Alex Blackwell chose to bat, Australia fought back with Leah Poulton top scoring with just 20. Sarah Elliott was unbeaten on 19. They finished their 20 overs 8-106 on Sunday (this morning, Sydney time).

But the day belonged to the bowlers, and Perry was the best of them, taking 2-4 from her first two overs and finishing with three wickets, while bowling one of the best final overs in women's T20 cricket, giving away no boundaries, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

The New Zealanders crashed to 5-36 in the 11th over and never recovered.

With the White Ferns needing 14 off the last over, Perry - backed up by fine fielding - didn't give up a boundary and the pace bowler finished with impressive figures of 3-18 runs from her maximum four overs.

The result was tough on Sophie Devine, whose 38 not out off 35 balls rescued New Zealand from a top order collapse to give them a shot at victory just a year after they had lost in the final to England at Lord's. (ANI)
