Symonds vows to put his irresponsible days behind

By Staff

Melbourne, Sep 17 (UNI) Apologising to his team-mates and pledging to return to the Test side, Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds insisted that he wants to put his irresponsible days behind him and will come up as a ''better person''.

Symonds, stood down in disgrace after his ''gone fishing'' debacle in Darwin last month, told how he had not been coping with his soaring profile and the grind of international cricket.

''Being recognised and that sort of thing is something that sometimes I deal with well and other times I don't deal with as well,'' he said.

''What wears us out is the long seasons and you don't get that time at home. I was really enjoying my time at home. You don't want to pack your (bags) and go again because you are so used to being at home and you are enjoying that. That's what I was going through.'' He, yesterday, took a major step towards regaining the trust of his team-mates when he appeared to speak from the heart and apologise for his errant behaviour.

''I would like to apologise to those people I have let down- family members, friends, mates, sponsors and fans,'' Symonds said.

''Hopefully, after the next little bit, I will come out of it a better person and won't make these mistakes in the future.

Since being stood down from the Australian cricket team, I have realised there have been a number of handbrakes that have been preventing me from being the best player, team-mate and person I can be.

''I am going through the process of trying to become not only a better cricketer, but a better person.'' UNI XC CS RAR AS1249
