India's table tennis scene is set to experience a significant boost with a record-breaking 13 entries securing direct qualification for the WTT Star Contender Chennai in 2025 based on their rankings.

This marks a historic high for Indian participation in all three WTT Star Contender events hosted in the country. The tournament, which begins on March 25, promises thrilling competition, featuring a strong international lineup including Japan's Tomokazu Harimoto (World Rank 4) and Hina Hayata (World Rank 5).

Star-Studded Competition Awaits

The competition will be intense, with Harimoto, the recent WTT Star Contender Doha 2025 champion, and Brazil's Hugo Calderano (WR 6), a Paris Olympics semifinalist, leading a formidable men's field.

The women's singles will see fierce battles with top 10 ranked players such as Hayata and Miwa Harimoto (WR 6) vying for supremacy. India's own Manika Batra, Sreeja Akula, Ayhika Mukherjee, and Yashaswini Ghorpade aim to make their mark in what is the strongest Indian women's representation at a WTT Star Contender event.

Kamlesh Mehta, Secretary General of TTFI, expressed pride in the progress of Indian table tennis, noting the significance of having more players qualify for main draws based on merit.

He stressed that such achievements reflect India's growing stature in global table tennis, with the WTT Star Contender Chennai presenting another opportunity for Indian players to showcase their skills against the world's best.

With a total prize pool of USD 275,000 and 600 points up for grabs for the champions, the stakes are high. The singles main draw will consist of 48 players, while the doubles main draw (men's, women's, and mixed) will feature 16 pairs. This structure ensures a competitive environment that will challenge participants and entertain fans.

Indian Paddlers Ready to Make Waves

On the men's side, Sharath Kamal leads the first-ever quartet of players to qualify directly for a men's singles main draw at an Indian Star Contender event. Alongside Manav Thakkar, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, and Harmeet Desai, Kamal represents the core of India's medal-winning teams at the Asiad and Asian Championships. Their participation underscores the depth of talent in India's table tennis ranks.

Deepak Malik, Co-founder and COO of Stupa Sports Analytics, highlighted the significance of India's strong showing, stating, "Indian table tennis has reached a significant milestone with its strongest-ever presence in a WTT Star Contender main draw."

He emphasized the global recognition of Indian table tennis's upward trajectory, marked by historic Olympic qualifications and consistent international performances.
