By MyKhel Staff

In an intense 72-move battle, D. Gukesh bounced back with a crucial win over German GM Vincent Keymer in the Masters section of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2025 in Wijk aan Zee on Wednesday.

Playing with white pieces, Gukesh overcame a few errors and displayed superior game-reading skills to secure his second win of the tournament. This victory broke his streak of three consecutive draws and propelled him to become India's new No. 1 in the live ratings.

Vincent Keymer, who had been part of Gukesh's preparation team during the World Chess Championship, succumbed under time pressure and resigned, giving Gukesh a well-deserved victory.

Meanwhile, R Praggnanandhaa continued his steady form, holding Dutch GM Max Warmerdam to a draw in a French Defence game that lasted 39 moves. Despite Praggnanandhaa's aggressive play with black pieces, Warmerdam's solid defense ensured a stalemate. Praggnanandhaa remained at the top of the standings, tied with Nodirbek Abdusattorov after Round 5.

Arjun Erigaisi and Leon Luke Mendonca also shared points after a short encounter in the Blumenfeld Countergambit. Mendonca missed a critical opportunity on move 18 to press for a win, allowing Erigaisi to secure a threefold repetition within 30 moves.

In other notable games, Vladimir Fedoseev defeated Fabiano Caruana in a commanding display, while Jorden van Foreest lost to Uzbek prodigy Nodirbek Abdusattorov, who continues to lead the standings alongside Praggnanandhaa. Defending champion Wei Yi and Pentala Harikrishna drew their game in just 22 moves, with neither player able to create significant chances.

Anish Giri, playing on home soil, held Alexey Sarana to a draw, keeping his tournament hopes alive.
