Team USA Seeks Top Seed At Paris Olympics For Strategic Advantage

Under Steve Kerr's guidance, Team USA aims to secure the top seed by winning their final group game at the Paris Olympics. A victory with a significant point difference is crucial for a favorable quarter-finals matchup.

Steve Kerr set the tone for his United States team before their final group game at the Paris Olympics. Team USA secured victories in their first two Group C matches, defeating Serbia and South Sudan. They will face Puerto Rico on Saturday, who have already been eliminated. Despite being assured of advancing to the last eight, there is still much at stake for the USA.

Kerr's team needs to win by more than four points to guarantee the top seed for the knockout stage. This would ensure they face the lowest-ranked team in the quarter-finals. "We want the No. 1 seed," Kerr stated. "It gives you the best matchup in the quarter-finals. So if we drop down to two or three—which I think is unlikely, but we've got to take care of our business—we possibly have a much tougher opponent."

USA Eyes Top Seed in Paris

Points differential is crucial for determining seeds in the knockout stage. Canada and Germany both maintained perfect records in their group campaigns, with Germany currently holding the top seed with a differential of +43.

"The point differential is a big thing," said guard Derrick White. "So even in the first two games, we focused on not taking our foot off like you do in the NBA sometimes. It's a little different than what we're used to, but that's all part of the tournament."

While Jrue Holiday is recovering from an injury, Anthony Davis is expected to play for Team USA, and Kevin Durant is embracing his role as a super-sub. "It's basketball," said veteran Durant. "It really doesn't matter who starts. It's about who finishes the game and who impacts it while they're playing."

Potential Quarter-Final Matchups

If Team USA secures the top seed, they could face Giannis Antetokounmpo's Greece, who defeated Australia to finish ahead of Spain in Group C. Greece must wait for the result of Serbia vs South Sudan to see if they will qualify.

The #USABMNT plays its final Group C preliminary round game vs Puerto Rico (11:15 am ET, NBC) tomorrow in Lille!

Team USA's focus remains on securing a favourable position as they head into their final group match against Puerto Rico. The outcome will determine their path forward in this highly competitive tournament.
