Tehran, February 3: India's Tejinder Pal Singh clinched a silver medal in shot put in the eighth Asian Indoor Athletics Championship in Tehran.

This is India's third medal of the three-day championship being held in the Iranian capital city.

It may be recalled that on the opening day, Sheena NV had won a silver in triple jump and Elakiya Dasan clinched bronze in the 60M.

Tejinder settled for silver with a throw of 19.18. His effort is an improvement from his season ending throw of 18.86M in Open Nationals.

Host nation's Ali Samari won the gold with a scintillating performance.

The 25-year-old came within 36 centimetres of the championship record to take the yellow metal with a throw of 19.42m, adding the continental indoor title to the outdoor one he won last year. China's Wu Zhiqiang clinched the bronze with an effort of 18.81.

Other star performers of the day include Abdalelah Haroun who defended his 400M title, China's Liang Xiaojing, who won the women's 60M with a new championship record and Svetlana Goldenova, who led a Kazakh 1-2 in the women's 400M.

Qatari Haroun, who holds the Asian indoor record for the distance, stopped the clock at 46.37 to become the first back-to-back winner of an Asian indoor 400M title.

In a race that was closer than many expected, the world indoor silver medallist finished just 0.29 ahead of Kuwait's Karam Yousef, who set a national indoor record of 46.66. Haroun's compatriot Mohamed Nasir Abbas was third in 46.76.

One day after the championship record was broken in the men's 60M final, Liang matched that achievement in the women's equivalent.

The 20-year-old, who holds the Asian Under-20 record in the event, was a clear winner in 7.20, equalling her personal best and taking 0.07 off the previous championship record set by Kazakhstan's Viktoriya Zyabkina two years ago. Zyabkina finished a distant second on this occasion, clocking 7.39.

Goldenova, the former 100 and 200M specialist, making just her fourth competitive appearance as a 400M runner, won in 53.28 ahead of compatriot Elina Mikhina (53.49) to reverse the finishing order from the recent Kazakh Indoor Championships.

The Asian indoor meet, which is the last major event for many of the athletes turning up for the World Indoor Championships to be held in Birmingham from March 1 to 4, will conclude on Saturday (February 3).
