The R&A has created a new exemption category for LIV Golf players to compete in The Open, making it easier for players from the Saudi-backed tour to qualify for one of golf's most prestigious events. This decision follows a similar move by the USGA, which introduced an exemption for LIV players to participate in the U.S. Open.
The top player in LIV Golf's season standings, who is not already exempt and finishes in the top five after the LIV Golf Dallas event in June, will secure a spot in The Open under the new rule. The R&A said it reviews its exemption policies every year to ensure that players from top tours have the opportunity to qualify for The Open.

The organization believes that players from LIV Golf should also have the chance to earn a place in the tournament based on their performance in LIV Golf's standings, in addition to the traditional qualification routes. This change provides a clear path for LIV Golf players to compete in The Open.
Previously, LIV Golf players could still compete in major tournaments, but they had no direct way to qualify. This often made it difficult for LIV players to secure a spot, especially if they didn't have an existing exemption. Now, with this new exemption category, LIV Golf players will have a fairer chance to earn a place in The Open based on their results in LIV Golf events.
The decision has been welcomed by LIV Golf, with its CEO expressing gratitude to the R&A for recognizing the strength of the LIV Golf field. LIV Golf players now have a better chance to compete in one of golf's biggest events, and this move is seen as a positive step for the sport as a whole.
The 153rd Open will take place at Royal Portrush from July 13 to 20, 2025. The new exemption system is expected to attract even more excitement and competition, as players from LIV Golf now have an opportunity to qualify and showcase their talents on a global stage.
