In October 2021, an ice hockey fan saved the life of Vancouver Canucks staffer Brian Hamilton by spotting a cancerous mole on his neck. At the time, Hamilton was serving as the assistant equipment manager for the Canucks, a professional ice hockey team in Canada.
During a National Hockey League (NHL) game between the Canucks and the Seattle Kraken, fan Nadia Popovici noticed a small mole on the back of Hamilton's neck.

Nadia, a medical student and hospital volunteer trained to identify potentially cancerous moles, quickly recognized the danger. She typed a message on her phone that read: "The mole on the back of your neck is possibly cancerous. Please go see a doctor!"
She patiently waited for the right moment to alert Hamilton, eventually pressing her phone against the glass so he could read the message. When Hamilton returned home, he asked his partner to check if the mole was indeed there.
A biopsy confirmed Nadia's suspicion-it was malignant melanoma, a type-2 skin cancer that can be treated safely if caught early but can be fatal if left unchecked.
In a later press conference, Hamilton expressed deep gratitude to the fan, recalling how her quick thinking may have saved his life. "She took me out of a slow fire," Hamilton said emotionally. "The doctor told me that if I had ignored it for four to five years, I wouldn't be here," he added.
Determined to thank Nadia, Hamilton issued a public statement asking for help to find her. When they finally met, Hamilton embraced her and expressed his heartfelt thanks. To further show his appreciation, he invited her to watch a game and gifted her $10,000 to support her medical studies.
Today, Hamilton is completely healthy, all thanks to that student who saved his life.
